The true story behind Netflix's new feature film: "Society of the Snow".
Carlos Paez is one of the protagonists in the most shocking aeronautical tragedy in history. Together with other companions, he has to resort to cannibalism to survive. He was just 18 years old.
In October 1972, the rugby club "Old Christian" from Uruguay, rents a flight to Chile to play a friendly match, but the plane crashes in the Andes Mountains at an altitude of 3600 meters and temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius. Of the 45 people on board, 16 managed to survive for 72 days, sheltered in the remains of the fuselage.
Now Carlos is over 65 years old and returns to the site of the accident with his children and grandchildren, to give thanks and pay tribute to those that were left behind in The Valley of Tears.
In 2022, Carlos took the opportunity to play his own father in "Society of the Snow", the new Netflix film based on this life-altering event, directed by J.A. Bayona ("The Impossible", "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom").
